SOMA Cape & Islands At A Glance

December 2007

The growing SOMA Cape & Islands program currently trains more than 1,100 Special Olympics Athletes and Unified Partners (non-disabled teammates) in 26 different individual and team sports. These athletes are supported by nearly 150 volunteer program coordinators and coaches and more than 1,000 event planning and day-of volunteers.

On an annual basis, thirty SOMA Cape & Islands teams practice weekly in preparation for nearly 40 local, regional and statewide competitions. These teams, which span the Upper, Mid- and Lower Cape, participate in events including:

·        South Section/Cape & Islands Track & Field Games at Barnstable High (May)

·        Cape Cod School Day Games at Mashpee High (May)

·        Habilitation Assistance Corp. Motor Skills at Otis AFB (June)

·        Bocce Assessment at Mass Maritime Academy (July)

·        Senior Sports Classic in Falmouth and Bourne (October)

·        CapeAbilities Motor Skills in Hyannis (December)

These teams also lead the way in raising much-needed funds for Special Olympics at the following events:

·        Passion Plunge at Old Silver Beach (February)

·        Law Enforcement Torch Run from Provincetown to Bourne (June)

·        Rock Harbor Fishing Tournament in Orleans (July)

·        Falmouth Road Race (August)

·        Jolly Jaunt 5K run/walk in Hyannis (December)

Key corporate and organizational supporters of local SOMA Cape & Islands athletes and teams include:

·        Ocean Spray

·        Dunkin’ Donuts

·        Wal-Mart

·        EJ Jaxtimer Landscaping

·        Bob Weeks Raw Bar

·        Palio Pizzeria/Kandy Korner

·        Onset Computer

·        Cape Cod Law Enforcement (Torch Run)

·        Cape Cod Broadcasting

It is only through the generosity of caring individuals and local businesses and organizations that SOMA can bring the full benefits of sports training and competition to our Special Olympics Athletes and their families who live and work on the Cape & Islands.
