Events and Schools Coordinator

Special Olympics Massachusetts’s mission is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, prepare for entry into school and community programs, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Description:

The Events and Schools Coordinator will be responsible for planning, organizing, managing & executing of year round Olympic like sport events for Special Olympics Massachusetts at all levels of the organization as well as be executing Special Olympic Massachusetts programing and events through relationships with school partners (Elementary – Higher Education).

Key Responsibilities/Skills Needed:

  • Ensure that policies, rules and regulations set forth by Special Olympics International and Special Olympics Massachusetts for all events, sport competitions and trainings are being followed at all levels of the organization
  • Implement Special Olympics Massachusetts Schools programing throughout all levels of education (elementary – Higher Education)) such as:
    • Unified PE
    • Unified Champion Schools core programing
    • Unified Intramurals
    • Young Athletes
  • Lead the implementation of assigned events, programing or partnerships which include, but are not limited to:
    • Scheduling and confirming facilities and all related event logistics
    • Recruit, liaison and educate volunteer event management teams
    • Recruit and liaison and educate certified officials and officials boards
    • Educate and train volunteer groups
  • Develop relationships with local programs, schools and coaches to ensure that the mission of Special Olympics is being delivered and programs meet standards set forth by Special Olympics
  • Attends and participates in all levels of sport competitions, practices, conferences, school based events, meetings or conferences as directed by supervisor
  • Works with the Logistics Manager to
    • Ensure all equipment is current and meets Special Olympics Massachusetts standards
    • Assist in the loading, unloading and transporting of equipment to all Special Olympics Massachusetts competitions and events
    • Make public appearances, and presentations on the importance of and support of Special Olympics Massachusetts activities
  • Maintain a flexible work schedule that includes nights and weekends
  • Ability to perform your duties, specifically those related to event execution, with a confident and calm demeanor
  • Perform other duties assigned by supervisor

Background Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Minimum 0 to 2 years of experience in event management, sports management or related field required
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, public speaking and relationship management skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and also independently
  • Strong event planning and execution background, with exceptional attention to detail and ability to thrive in deadline driven environment
  • Proficiency in MS office Suite
  • Must be able and willing to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the following skills: Action oriented, Decision Quality, Dealing with Change & Uncertainty, Building Effective Teams, Customer Focused and Managing Vision & Purpose
