Game Changer: Athlete Lumene Montissol

By: Jennifer Dowdy

Special Olympics Massachusetts athlete Lumene Montissol often signs her name “Lightning” – a well deserved nickname for this soccer and track star. Known by her teammates and coaches for being one of the fastest athletes on the soccer field and track, Lumene has grown  as an athlete and as a person by participating in Special Olympics.

When she was in middle school, Lumene joined Special Olympics and played bocce, basketball, soccer, and track and field. She said joining Special Olympics taught her “determination and sportsmanship,” skills she still uses today. As Lumene got older, she realized that her speed was one of her greatest strengths as an athlete and she quickly excelled at track and field. When she got to high school, she tried out for her high school track and field team. Not only did Lumene make the track team, but she received numerous medals at competitions because of her incredible speed. She’s fast like lightning.

This past summer, Lumene took her soccer skills to the next level by being on the Revolution Unified Soccer Team. Not only did Lumene get to play soccer in front of hundreds of New England Revolution soccer fans at Gillette Stadium, she also traveled with the team to Chicago to play an away game in front of Chicago Fire soccer fans. Lumene shared,“being on the team made me feel like I belong here.” She now has a group of teammates she can call her friends, which she joyfully says, “gives me more confidence.”

Now a high school graduate, Lumene is excited to get back on the field this season with the Milton soccer team and also plans to join the Milton track and field team in the spring. She says her favorite part of playing sports is “facing new teams and seeing everyone having fun while meeting different people.” She also hopes that she will meet a lot more volunteers this fall and that for anyone thinking of volunteering, “just do it!”
Look out for Lumene on the field this fall – “the storm is coming!”
Lumene was interviewed after the Revs Unified Team took on The Fire at Gillette Stadium in June, 2017:
