MVC Unified Basketball – Regular Season Recap

Regular-season games have concluded for the Inaugural Merrimack Valley Conference (MVC) Unified Basketball Season! By all accounts the season has been a great success. Many thanks to the administration and particularly the athletic departments at Andover, Billerica, Haverhill, Methuen, North Andover, and Tewksbury High Schools. And a special thanks to the great coaches of each team. As mentioned previously, the coaches all exemplified the exceptional characteristics necessary to run great unified basketball program.

As best we can tell (Editor’s Note: I may have missed some games as I only know what I see on twitter and what NAHS’ Unified Sports leader Steve Nugent tells me), each school hosted at least one home game and each team got a chance to travel to an away game. Both of these “rite of passage” experiences – playing in front of a home crowd and the bus ride with teammates to an away game – were a “first” for many of the participating student athletes. Thanks so much to all for making this happen!

In no particular order, some game news:

Methuen and Haverhill had a home-and-home series. In the first match-up at Haverhill High, it was close early…

But Haverhill ran away late to go to 3-0 on the season:

The rematch in Methuen at the Klimas was a barn-burner! Haverhill started out hot…

But Methuen’s Wilmelys Villar went to work late, scoring two big baskets down the stretch to lead her team to a 36-35 victory:

Methuen was fired up after their hard-earned first win of the season:

Elsewhere in the MVC, Tewksbury and Billerica continued their ongoing rivalry with a great match-up in front of a raucous Billerica crowd. Billerica led most of the game behind Matt Murgo:

and Madison Parent:

But Tewksbury’s Hannah Dwight put the Redmen up 40-38 with this shot, and the road team held on for a 52-45 victory.

Tewksbury hosted Andover the next night in front of a great crowd:

Andover High hosted North Adndover in another rivalry game. But the gracious hosts made everyone feel at home with some quality pre-game festivities:

The visiting Scarlet Knights emerged victorious, with a late lay-up to ice a 3-point victory.

Great Regular Season all! Thanks so much! Looking forward to the Season-Ending Tournament at Tewksbury High on Tuesday November 14th!
