Special Olympics USA Basketball Team Announced

Hometown basketball team to compete on the world’s stage

The Special Olympics Massachusetts Basketball team that is set to compete against teams from across the country at the 2018 USA Games has been selected to represent Special Olympics USA at the 2019 Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Team Massachusetts, made up of athletes from the Shrewsbury local program, will be the sole male traditional team in the Special Olympics USA delegation.

The Special Olympics World Games provides an opportunity for athletes with intellectual disabilities to display their abilities on and off the field of play for the whole world to see. The event is set to be the largest sporting event in the UAE in 2019 and will bring the international competition to the Middle East for the first time, continuing to spread the message of inclusion to new regions.

Special Olympics Massachusetts CEO, Mary Beth McMahon said “I am so excited for these athletes. I know they will represent their towns, the Commonwealth, and the United States with dignity and sportsmanship!” Adding, “This is a wonderful opportunity for the world to see what Inclusion is all about. The teamwork and skill displayed by this team will help inspire the next generation of Special Olympics athletes.”

The 2019 Games represents the first time Massachusetts will send a basketball team to represent Special Olympics USA at World Games. Historically, Massachusetts has sent athletes to compete in individual sports, but we are excited to have the opportunity to send an established team to showcase their teamwork and camaraderie. Many of the athletes know each other well and compete year-round in a number of sports. Their core group of players have been together for over 10 years.

About Special Olympics World Games Selection:
The World Games Organizing Committee determines the size of the games based on available accommodations, sports facilities and other resources needed to put on the Games. With the total capacity, Special Olympics International reviews the census data from around the world and awards delegation sizes to each country. In the United States, Special Olympics USA uses the delegation size and sports awarded to provide a quota to each chapter. For the 2019 Games, Massachusetts was awarded one traditional basketball team made up of 10 athletes and two coaches. For the first time, Special Olympics USA has decided to take only those teams who compete at the national level – USA Games. If you have any questions about the selection process, please feel free to contact Special Olympics Massachusetts.
