Sports & Community Intern - Spring 2026

Join the most inclusive sports organization and help provide athletic programming to thousands of Special Olympics athletes across Massachusetts. As a member of the sports and community development department, you will learn skills needed to manage large-scale sports events, work with volunteers, manage logistics, and communicate needs to participants. The mission of Special Olympics Massachusetts (SOMA) is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, prepare for entry into school and community programs, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Sports team in managing portfolio of sports programs across the organization, including but not limited to the following
    • League and tournament planning which includes producing schedules, event logistics and equipment pack out, scheduling and confirming facilities and vendors, updating weekly results/standings and interfacing and hiring of officials
    • Volunteer management including communications before, during, and after the event
    • Follow up surveys
    • Lead staff member and/or point of contact on the day-of, representing and speaking on behalf of SOMA
  • Support execution of School Day Games events
  • Assist Community Engagement team by planning recreational sports skills centers which include
    • Weekly volunteer and athlete communication
    • Onsite facilitator
    • Site logistics and equipment pack out
  • Support annual Summer Games by creating list of possible Olympic Town vendors to invite to 2026 games. List includes
    • Entertainment/Activities
    • Food trucks

Skills Needed:

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, public speaking, and relationship management skills
  • Event planning and execution background with exceptional attention to detail and ability to thrive in a deadline-driven environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes nights and weekends
  • Ability to effectively manage a wide array of tasks, projects, and responsibilities
  • Demonstrated capability to conduct oneself in a calm and professional demeanor when dealing with people and/or with difficult situations.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of staff, volunteers, and other constituents.

Requirements

  • Based in Marlborough and is not a remote/hybrid role
  • 20-30 hours per week
  • Credit based
  • Mileage for work related activities to be reimbursed
